The Short Version….
I’m a photographer and storyteller. I’ll take any excuse to be traveling and barefoot, even better if it’s with my three kids.
The Long Story…
I’m still working on this one, but here goes…
The air is sultry under the slow sweep of the ceiling fan, and the ice-cubes melt in my drink. Paneless windows show a view, shimmering in heat haze, of a tropical jungle, as I dispatch images and type-written words to the news outlets – my dream job was always to be a war correspondent dressed in a flak jacket filled with film canisters, shooting gritty reality. Notice I’m still shooting film in my dream job. Truth be told, by the time I realised I could be a career photographer, my youthful bravado was headed the same way as camera film, so a dream it remained.
I wanted to be a photographer from an early age, though, and my parents bought me my Pentax K1000 when I was 15 (I still love to use that camera!). My first professional booking was shooting a model portfolio, straight out of school, then some album covers for bands, before settling into real estate photography. In those years I also worked variously as a model, law clerk, mechanic, kindy teacher, and a few other things before going full-time as a photographer of families, weddings, births, bubs and everything else that I shoot.
I love to laugh, travel, eat cheese, and drink champagne. I love having bare feet. I love hot weather, and being in the water. And I have a weird knack for remembering song lyrics. I am forever seeking knowledge, wanting to learn more about the world and everything in it. I’m an empath, an ambivert, and a critical thinker.
My greatest achievement, and surprise, is raising three intelligent, amazing and loving children. Mostly single-handedly. Born two years apart, my son, Evan, and twin daughters, Belle and India, have made me stronger, wiser, and more proud than I could ever have imagined. They make me laugh all the time, and they make me think, and I don’t know how I got so lucky to be their mum. All three have worked as photographers, too, shooting alongside me, as well as taking bookings in their own businesses. My partner, Sonny, is also a photographer and a wanderer of the earth, and the five of us live with a cat called Elsa, 6 chickens, 3 fish, and some honeybees.
My photography style is narrative. Like that war correspondent. And while I sometimes love to shoot a fully-styled, flash-lit, studio-set extravaganza, my heart will always go back to the documentary photo stories. I’m so keen to hear your crazy ideas and your wild plans, whether they are a couple of hours shooting, or a couple of weeks! I have travel and adventures planned all the time, so check my travel dates here, or let me know where you are, or where it is that you are going, and let’s make some pretty pictures. Because that makes me smile.
I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and I pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging, and respect to the traditional storytellers, and creatives on the land that I live and work.
