“Last month, Jacqui Turner from Running Under The Sprinkler came to Tassie to photograph our garden wedding weekend.
The brief was simple: absolutely no posed or set-up photos.
As lovers of authenticity, we were keen to avoid anything airbrushed or sanitised and instead wanted a collection of images to remember our wedding day by that was candid, natural and raw.
Jacqui and I share the same aesthetic North Star so really, it was a natural fit. Roughly speaking, our shared aesthetic bent translates as appreciating the beauty of imperfection or, as the Japanese say so succinctly, ‘wabi sabi’.
From the casual mess of a household preparing for a wedding to our unfinished house renovation to a garden that was deep in drought, we wanted all of it to be recorded for us to look back on and remember in unvarnished splendour.
Jacqui’s work transcends ordinary wedding photography and becomes something that straddles social documentary/social commentary and high art. By inviting the viewer in to share the space with the subject, she makes each shot feel meaningful, authentic and profoundly intimate.
Jacqui and her second shooters Belle and India (who, incredibly, were still only 17 years old at the time of the wedding!) have a rare ability to be unobtrusively present and to somehow make the subject feel safe and at ease, even while shooting intensely personal situations.
