My son, Evan, was born on Christmas Eve, so when I got the text from Maddy to say her contractions had begun, on the evening of his 20th birthday, I had a small sweet pain of nostalgia. How those 20 years had flown by in the blink of an eye! But I grabbed a sandwich for the road, and jumped into my car and headed to Maddy and Stu’s house, where she was birthing.
This is their birth story.
This is motherhood.
About 6pm on Christmas Eve, this was Maddy.
Birthing at home, Christmas Eve, the air was muggy and hot, contractions were every minute or so, and she was walking and working through them in the garden.
Arlo the dog figured she was out there to play, and little Hazel was bathed and ready for bed, but needed some cuddles first.
And that’s how mums do it.
And being Christmas Eve, there was still the advent calendar to attend to.
Well hello Otis.
What a perfect Christmas present you are!
Less than 20 minutes after being born, cord still attached, still in the warm birthing pool, and these beautiful eyes were looking towards the camera.
All photography makes me smile,
but some makes me smile just a teeny bit more.
I was home in time for Evan’s party.
